Welcome

For over 40 years Hilary Cartmel has worked as an artist, completing over 60 public art projects from sites at Exeter Cathedral to Edinburgh Castle, including many community lead projects where she worked through public engagement sessions to realise the outline design and much of the detail of the artworks with the clients themselves. She has also made work for private commission and shown work in exhibitions from Devon to the North of Scotland. She has been ‘in residence’ as an artist in schools, psychiatric hospital, youth centres, and Grizedale Forest, Cumbria.

She has lived and worked in the same studio for 30 years on the North Nottinghamshire / South Yorkshire border.

Recently together with her husband, sculptor Michael Johnson they have developed a derelict 18th Century Dovecot in their yard into an exhibition space and from which to run workshops www.dovecotgallery.co.uk

This website gives you a taste of some of the work produced during this time. Some is available to buy. So if something piques your interest please contact the artist, however its tricky buying from a website, where you cant touch and feel the work, much better to arrange a visit or come to the gallery when its open.
