Heads and Figures
an extract from the artist's statement from the 'Freedom to touch' catalogue: Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle Upon tyne 1987
'Katherine is one of a number of women's heads that I have made during the past two years, most of which have been made in steel. i cut up a large pile of steel rods and small pieces of plate steel and then forge them into rougher shapes so as the steel loses its newness and becomes like a pile of charcoal lines with which I can begin to 'draw' The head grows quickly from the inside until it reaches the outer skin.'
